FAQs

1. What is Dal Dhokli

Dal Dhokli is a Gujarati comfort dish where wheat flour dumplings (dhokli) are cooked in a sweet-spicy-tangy dal (lentil soup). It’s a complete one-pot meal.

2. Can I use store-bought pasta instead of homemade dhokli

Not recommended—the texture differs. For shortcuts, use rolled chapatis cut into squares (add just before serving).

3. Why is my dal too thick

  • Add hot water to adjust consistency.

  • Remember: Dhokli absorbs liquid as it cooks.

4. How to make it gluten-free

Use jowar or bajra flour for dhokli and tamarind (not wheat-based goda masala).

5. What’s the secret to balanced flavor

Gujarati-style requires 3 tastes:

  • Sweet (jaggery/jaggery powder)

  • Tangy (tamarind or lemon)

  • Spicy (red chili + goda masala)

6. Can I add vegetables

 Yes! Classic additions:

  • Drumsticks (flavor-infusing)

  • Pumpkin or sweet potato (natural sweetness)
